Syracuse Beaches: the best ones to discover between coves and nature reserves

Some people come to Syracuse for the history, some for the markets in Ortigia, some for the food. Then they discover the sea. Syracuse beaches are all different: hidden coves, reserves where you can walk among the paths, easy-to-reach spots for a quick swim. From the historic centre, you can get to the coast in just a few minutes, even on foot or by public transport.

Come and stay at Hotel Algilà in Ortigia: you can alternate the view over baroque rooftops with a swim among the rocks of Plemmirio or the clear sand of Fontane Bianche. This is an invitation to head out early, slip on your flip-flops and explore the coast one corner at a time.

The most beautiful beaches in and around Syracuse

There are beaches you stumble upon by chance and never forget. In Syracuse, this happens a lot. All you need to do is leave the centre, follow the coastline, and let the light lead the way. Here’s a short guide to the most beautiful beaches near Syracuse.

Fontane Bianche: white sand and turquoise waters

Fontane Bianche beach, about 15 km from Syracuse, is one of the most popular spots. Easy to reach by car or local buses, its name comes from freshwater springs that once flowed in the area.

The shoreline is wide, the sand light-coloured, and the seabed shallow for several metres. It's a good choice if you’re looking for a comfortable beach day, with a mix of beach clubs, bars, free areas and clear water that invites long swims.

In the summer weekends, it can get crowded—best to go early or visit on weekdays.

Plemmirio Nature Reserve: rocky shores and protected snorkelling spots

The Plemmirio Nature Reserve, south of Ortigia, isn’t your typical beach. Here, the sea meets low cliffs and flat rocks, with small hidden coves you can reach on foot or by bike.

This is a protected marine area: no beach clubs, few services, but crystal-clear waters and rich seabeds. Perfect for snorkelling or swimming in untouched surroundings.

The easiest access is from the Maddalena area (Gate 34), where you can park and walk down to the sea in just a few minutes.

Arenella and Ognina: easy-to-reach, family-friendly beaches

If you're travelling with children or prefer comfort and convenience, Arenella and Ognina are two great options, both less than 10 km from Syracuse centre. Arenella beach offers a stretch of sand with beach clubs, free zones, restaurants and nearby parking. Ognina is smaller, with a quiet bay, some flat rocks, and calm water.

Both beaches are ideal for a stress-free half-day by the sea, easy to reach by car from Ortigia or with summer shuttle services.

Calamosche and Vendicari: unspoiled nature just outside Syracuse

Calamosche beach is located inside the Vendicari Nature Reserve, just south of Noto and still easy to reach from Syracuse. You’ll get there after a 20-minute walk along a dirt path, through low Mediterranean scrub and rare silences.

The cove is sheltered between two rocky promontories, the water stays calm even when it's windy, and there are no services—you’ll need to bring everything with you.

Not far away, still within the reserve, you’ll find other wider and less crowded beaches, such as Marianelli or Eloro. Great for those who want peace, wild surroundings, and a sea that shifts colour as the day goes on.

Practical tips to enjoy the sea in Syracuse

The best time to visit Syracuse beaches is from May to mid-October. June and September are ideal: stable weather, warm water, and fewer crowds. In peak season, especially in July and August, it’s a good idea to head out early in the morning to find parking and a quiet spot.

Many beaches offer both free areas and equipped ones. If you choose wilder spots like Plemmirio or Vendicari, bring water, food, sturdy shoes, and some shade. On more equipped beaches, you can rent sunbeds and umbrellas or have lunch by the sea.

Some coves can only be reached on foot or by boat—a short boat trip from Ortigia can be a convenient and scenic way to discover them.rirle!
