Papyrus Museum in Syracuse.

More than a (small) museum in the traditional sense, this is a center for the study of papyrus, its production, its preservation, and its restoration.

It was founded thanks to the possibilities offered by the presence in Syracuse, on the Ciane River, of the only papyrus plants in a natural state in Europe.  As a result, by the end of the 18th century in Syracuse they had begun to produce the papyrus paper that the tourist will easily find for sale in souvenirs shops.

This tradition has provided for the accumulation of considerable experience, to the point that it is to experts working in this institution that a number of archaeological museums around the world entrust the restoration of their ancient and fragile papyrus.

In addition to a section dedicated to ancient papyrus scrolls, from the 15th century B.C. to 8th century A.D., the museum also displays objects made of papyrus in Africa (such as boats, ropes, mats) and items used to make papyrus paper and to write on it in ancient times.

The museum organizes educational workshops for schoolchildren (in Italian language) where it is possible to help with the manufacture of papyrus paper and to try it oneself.
It also organizes guided tours (in Italian), also for adults, which include a history of papyrus, film screenings, and live demonstrations of the techniques used in the manufacture of papyrus.
For information about these activities call (++39) 0931 22100 - 61616 (fax: (++39) 0931 22100, email: museopapiro@sistemia.it).

From the Papyrus Museum one can easily reach the Regional Archaeological Museum (a few steps away), the Catacombs of San Giovanni, the Shrine of the Madonna delle Lacrime (Our Lady of Tears), and a little further away, the Archaeological Park of Syracuse.
